Smith-Taylor Cabin, Taylor's Island

Shelter Island · 1900

A log cabin built around 1900 by F. M. Smith on what was then Cedar Island, alone in the middle of Coecles Harbor. S. Gregory Taylor left the island and the cabin to the Town of Shelter Island for the "use and enjoyment of the general public", and a town committee has been restoring it ever since. A sandy tombolo joins it to the rest of Shelter Island; it is also a stop on the Coecles Harbor Marine Water Trail, so the honest way to arrive is by kayak.
